原田教授が2024年10月に韓国・テグで行われたアジア・オセアニア火災科学技術シンポジウムで功労賞を受賞しました。
- 受賞者:原田和典(教授)
- 受賞理由:From fundamental research to practical engineering, the candidate
has made contributions in many aspects. He has started his research career
on fire resistance of concrete. As an instructor at Kyoto university, he
has worked on hygro-thermal response of concrete elements. The hygro-thermal
response of concrete wall could be predicted by a model of simultaneous
heat and moisture transfer. The achievement was awarded as the best paper
(second place) at the first AOSFST, 1992 in Hefei.
After he moved to Building Research Institute, his research area has shifted to practical area but he retained the context of fundamental principles of fire science into practical engineering. As to the fire resistance problem, performance- verification method for fire resistance was established and implemented into regulation scheme. Part of the work was awarded as a best paper (second place) at the second symposium on fire and venting deflagrations, 1997. As to the performance-based fire safety design of buildings, he has been a pioneer of Japanese FSE practice. He led the Japanese team for SFPE’s case study team and presented 7 case studies on fire safety design examples during 1997 to 2008. The case study influenced the practice not only in Japan but also in other foreign countries. Rewarding the achievement, SFPE awarded him with the Harold E. Nelson Service Award in 2009.
Since 2000, he has been working for Kyoto University as a professor in Architecture & Architectural Engineering. The main tasks are education and research on fire and architectural engineering. During the period, he has authored many papers and as well as design guidelines for practitioners. In 2016, SFPE published a 5th edition of Fire Protection Handbook. He was one of the editors and made extensive editorial works and communicated with the authors. For this effort, SFPE has awarded him with the Hat's Off Awards. In addition, he received Mid-Career award for fire research from International FORUM of Fire Research Directors in 2015
As domestic activities, he has authored an introductory textbook for students. As to practical guidelines, he has authored and/or edited many guidelines on fire engineering, including fire resistive design of steel structures, principles of fire safety design, design fire load and fire actions in buildings and so on. He is an awardee of several domestic awards, including JAFSE award.
